Sotheby's goes online

World-renowned auction house Sotheby's said yesterday it hassigned up 1500 art dealers in the United States and Europe for itsnew Internet site, allowing them to trade their wares onlinestartingin July.

The site, sothebys.com, will offer an online platform forauctioning art, antiques, and jewellery and is aimed atcomplementingSotheby's core live auction business.

Its first online auction will be baseball memorabilia fromenthusiast Barry Halper's collection, which will take place via theInternet and also live auction in New York.Only professionals will be allowed to sell on the site, althoughanyone will be able to buy over the Internet. Eventually, theInternet site might complement or even replace phone-in bids at liveauctions.
