Fed: Crest battle may prompt legal action by private schools

SYDNEY, Feb 11 AAP - Private schools may take legal steps to protect their crests as
exclusive Sydney boys' school Cranbrook fights a local uniform company for ownership of
its symbol.

The Australian newspaper reported today that Sydney clothing manufacturer Wylie's Schoolwear
put in a trademark application for Cranbrook's 86-year-old crest in 2002, which was then
opposed by the school.

A company with exclusive rights to a school's crest could charge the school for its
use on uniforms and promotional material, or prevent the school from selling its own uniforms,
the paper said.

Cranbrook, in the eastern Sydney suburb of Bellevue Hill, is expecting a decision next
month from IP Australia, the government agency responsible for patents, on whether it
has exclusive rights to use the crest and the school motto, the paper reported.
