Qld: Mining magnate bolsters LNP coffers
Eds: Adds comments from LNP
BRISBANE, Feb 2 AAP - One of Australia's richest men, Clive Palmer, donated more than
$600,000 to Queensland's conservative parties in the past financial year, new figures
show.
But the Liberal National Party (LNP) has turned the heat back on Labor, saying it was
run by heavily-donating unions.
Figures released by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) on Monday show Mr Palmer's
company Mineralogy donated $542,000 to The Nationals and $100,000 to the Liberal Party.
The largest single donation was $300,000.
He also provided $20,000 to the ALP in Western Australia.
Mr Palmer told AAP in a statement: "After the disclosure of today's figures it is clear
that the unions are funding the Labor Party while the LNP is funded by its members." He
declined to comment further.
Mr Palmer, who has mining interests in Queensland and Western Australia, is suing Queensland
Premier Anna Bligh for $1 million over comments she made in an ABC television interview.
In the interview, Ms Bligh made comments about Mr Palmer's influence over the LNP.
Meanwhile, Mr Palmer was quoted in a weekend newspaper as saying he would seek to influence
an LNP government and that he believed he was entitled to do so.
Ms Bligh on Sunday stood by her comments, saying she and all other Queenslanders were
entitled to question Mr Palmer's interest in the LNP.
The AEC figures also showed the Queensland ALP's largest donation was $498,504 from
the Communications Electrical and Plumbing Union.
LNP deputy leader Mark McArdle said the figures spoke loudly about union influence on Labor.
"The unions control the Labor Party. This is all about Anna Bligh being too terrified
and scared about running on her own record of absolute failure and trying to pass on to
somebody else an issue to fight," Mr McArdle told reporters in Townsville.
Mr McArdle said Mr Palmer only had one vote within the LNP as a member of the party.
"Every member of the LNP has one vote," Mr McArdle said.
"Mr Palmer will have one vote, I will have one vote, and every member will have one
vote, and no more than that."

For the first time in its history, people all over the world could watch the IDF's outstanding soldiers ceremony, President Shimon Peres said. Live Internet coverage of the ceremony on Tuesday was facilitated through the efforts of the Ministry for Public Diplomacy and Diaspora Affairs.
The 120 exceptional soldiers were presented to President Shimon Peres by Chief of General Staff Lt. General Benny Gantz during a festive ceremony at Beit Hanassi.
The soldiers comprised 34 females, 86 males, three married soldiers, 20 olim from some dozen countries, nine officers, 53 combat soldiers and nine lone soldiers.
Gantz said the officers and soldiers came from all over the country, from all branches of the IDF, from different walks of life and different religious, national and ethnic backgrounds, but collectively, they could be described as "Israel's best."
In attendance were Israel's fifth president Yitzhak Navon, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, former Haganah, Lechi and Etzel activists, the General Staff commanders and officers, present and former commanders of the Defense Forces and Intelligence, former defense ministers, former chiefs of General Staff, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, a major (res) in the Paratroopers, and the families of the honorees.
Paratrooper Lt. Daniel Francis, speaking on behalf of the 120 honorees said, "Many of our people did not have the opportunity to defend themselves. We have that privilege. The Haganah and the Palmach gave us the guidelines and we are continuingE"
Among the soldiers were Druze and Bedouins, religious and secular, Ashkenazi and North African, and new immigrants from countries including the US, UK, Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Iran and Thailand.
One of the soldier-olim was Corporal Izzy Ezagui of the Givati Brigade, who was singled out for mention by Gantz.
Ezagui, who was born in Miami, came to Israel at age 19 in 2007 and joined the Haruv Kfir infantry unit of the IDF. During Operation Cast Lead, he was sitting with fellow combat soldiers in a tent on the Gaza border when a heavy mortar exploded next to them, severing Ezagui's left arm. He lost a tremendous amount of blood and spent six months in hospital recuperating from his injury. Following his recovery, Ezragui insisted on returning to combat duty, and his motivation made so strong an impression on the IDF, that he was permitted to return.
Ezagui said through his experience, he is prepared to serve as an example and boost the morale of his fellow soldiers.
Another of the honorees, Sergeant Reuven Remez, a third generation Sabra who serves in the Israel Air Force, is the grandson of Maj. Gen. Aharon Remez, the first commander of the IAF, and the great grandson of David Remez, Israel's first Minister for Transportation. Reuven did not disclose his pedigree until after he had been informed that he was selected for the Independence Day honors.
All 120 outstanding soldiers received certificates of excellence from Peres and a NIS 4,000 scholarship from the Association for the Welfare of Israel's Soldiers. The scholarships were donated by the Len Blavatnik Foundation through the UK Friends of AWIS.

NSW:Innocent person will die soon: NSW police
SYDNEY, Aug 30 AAP - Senior police are warning it won't be long until an innocent life
is lost, after a family narrowly escaped injury when a gunfight rocked their quiet suburban
street.
It was the ninth shooting in Sydney's west in less than a fortnight.
A mother, father and two children aged nine and 11 were inside their home when the
incident took place on Monday night.
Two stray bullets from a nearby gun battle thudded into the front of their Greenacre home.
"We have concerns that if anything like this continues or we get more incidents of
a similar nature, it might not be a case of if something happens to an innocent party
but when," Bankstown police commander Chief Superintendent Peter Gillam told reporters
on Tuesday.
Police believe the occupants of two cars wildly sprayed up to 12 bullets at each other
at or near the intersection of Hillcrest Avenue and Mimosa Road before 10pm (AEST).
Suspects or a motive for the gun battle are yet to be established.
The investigation could end up being grouped with a strike force established into eight
other shootings in western Sydney since August 19.
A Toyota Rav 4 believed to have been used in Monday night's incident is among the best
leads that police have.
It was found torched in nearby Wiley Park not long after the shooting and matched a
description of a vehicle used in the incident.
Supt Gillam could not say where the family of four was when the bullets hit their home
but said they were aware something had happened.
"I can make a pretty strong assumption ... if it happened to anyone's house here you'd
feel a little concerned in respect to your safety," he added.
"But I can say this `we're putting a lot of resources into this investigation to get
an early conclusion hopefully'."
Neighbours spoken to as part of the investigation into Monday night's shooting were
being co-operative, Supt Gillam said.
The family whose home was hit were entirely innocent bystanders, he added.
Neighbours raised the alarm via a triple zero call on Monday night after hearing gunshots.

Peabody Engineering Integrates WATCH-IT with New Boundary's TankVista
Type: News
New Boundary Technologies announced Peabody Engineering, a provider of tank management systems, integrated New Boundary Technologies' TankVista remote monitoring and control software into its newly released Tank WATCH-IT remote tank monitoring solution.
TankVista collects and aggregates raw tank sensor data and converts it into actionable information, graphs and maps, all readily available from any computer with an Internet connection. Specifically, TankVista's cloud-based mapping features allow users to remotely visualize tank locations and conditions, and identify tanks in need of refill or service without the need for physical site visits that include manual, unsafe and often less-than- accurate measuring techniques.
"Re-selling TankVista as Tank WATCH-IT enables us to deliver a new service offering and provides more advanced asset tracking tools for our clients," said Mark Peabody, chief executive officer of Peabody Engineering. "Our clients want to improve operational efficiencies through remote tank monitoring, and Tank WATCH-IT allows us to help them do so by offering a complete, end-to-end tank manufacturing and remote monitoring experience."
Peabody Engineering's Tank WATCH-IT solution also integrates TankVista with Digi International's iDigi Tank - a wireless machine- to-machine (M2M) solutions bundle that includes the tank sensors, hardware, hosted software and additional services needed to connect remote tank assets, the Company said. Peabody Engineering can install and pre-configure Tank WATCH-IT sensors and networking equipment prior to client delivery and installation for even greater time and cost savings.
"TankVista is a game-changer in the remote tank management and commercial storage industry," said Kim Pearson, chief executive officer of New Boundary Technologies. "We look forward to working with progressive tank manufacturers such as Peabody Engineering to help them grow their own profit margins while their clients do the same through effective remote monitoring and control."

FED:Decade to close as hottest ever: UN
By Steve Lillebuen
MELBOURNE, Dec 3 AAP - Don't be fooled by Australia's wet and mild conditions.
A United Nations weather agency report, released on Friday, found 2010 is almost certain
to rank as one of the hottest three years on record while the past 10 years are the warmest
period since climate data began in 1850.
David Jones, head of climate analysis for the Bureau of Meteorology, said Australia
was protected from the severe temperatures in 2010 by a La Nina weather pattern, which
brought record-breaking rain across most of the country.
"While Australia has escaped this year ... other parts of the planet are seeing incredibly
hot temperatures," he told reporters gathered with other climate scientists in Melbourne
on Friday.
Climate change patterns during the next decade will likely bring continuing volatile
weather conditions along Australia's east coast with cycles of rain and heat, he said.
However, dry conditions in Western Australia, especially around Perth, could continue
with greater risks of major drought.
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) released the new weather figures during
UN climate talks in Cancun, Mexico at 4am (AEDT) on Friday after compiling global records.
Temperatures for 2010 are currently estimated at 0.55C above the 1961-1990 annual average,
which is used as a climate warming benchmark.
Only 1998 and 2005 have been warmer than 2010 since records began.
Final yearly temperature data from November and December will be examined early next
year to determine if 2010 will remain in the top three.
The agency's global climate snapshot showed the past 12 months have been marked by
dramatic weather: the worst flooding in Pakistan's history, unprecedented drought in the
Amazon, extreme heatwaves across Russia in which 11,000 people died and continued decreases
in Arctic sea ice.
Australia's fragile Great Barrier Reef is still at risk with research scientist Claire
Spillman saying ocean warming trends have a real danger of killing off parts of the reef.
She said wide-spread coral bleaching occurred in 2010 across southeast Asia.
"The overall outlook is saying the reef will bleach more often and more severely, which
will basically reduce the resilience of the reef," she added.
The climate change outlook pushes Australia further into unknown territory, with major
dilemmas in agricultural management.
John Williams, CSIRO's former land and water chief, said the country's weather is largely
determined by the interactions of 13 climate systems, which cycle from between 30 days
to 50 years.
"We don't know how climate change will affect those systems that we're currently familiar
with," he said.
"That means we're going into periods of uncertainty."
Farmers will have to get used to climate change amplifying weather patterns, increasing
the chances of both bumper crops and failed seasons.
"What we're seeing is a drying in winter and much more spring and summer rain," he said.
"That's going to have impacts on the way we crop and manage."
The severity of bushfires will remain dependent on the length of time between rain and heatwaves.
Mr Jones noted that Victoria was unseasonably wet only six weeks before Black Saturday
and similar weather trends are likely to continue.
The federal government announced $1.9 million to support research into the health
impacts of climate change as the global weather report was released.
While the UN report did not blame the warming directly on man-made greenhouse gases,
WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said such a cause is confirmed in other research
on carbon emissions.
"It's an additional element to confirm that there is indeed warming," he told reporters
in Cancun.

Fed: Housing crunch worsens as population boom continues
A new report says a nationwide housing shortfall has expanded far beyond expectations
.. as hundreds of thousands are priced out of the home ownership dream.
And the assessment for the next two decades is bleak .. with the report saying an exploding
population is projected to outpace property development in a massive housing crunch which
requires a substantial government response.
The National Housing Supply Council's report says the supply gap for housing reached
178 thousand 400 homes by June 2009 .. an increase from 99 thousand 500 at the same time
last year.
An additional 180 thousand homes need to be built every year for the next 20 years
.. just to keep pace with population growth.
It says major cities will be hit the hardest .. with Brisbane and south-east Queensland
accounting for 21 per cent of growth .. Melbourne at 19 per cent and Sydney sits at 16
per cent.

LYNN NEARY, host:
Google has blown away critics who said the sagging economy would hit the company's profits. But the Internet search and advertising behemoth has reported a rise in quarterly earnings, partly due to overseas Web surfers, and also because of a new online ad formula.
NPR's Laura Sydell has more.
LAURA SYDELL: Analysts had lowered expectations, because recently, they noticed fewer people were clicking Google's online ads. Steve Weinstein of Pacific Crest Security says when Google released its earnings, there was a collective sense of surprise. In the first quarter, the company's earnings were up 30 percent, or about $300 million in the midst of a slow economy.
Mr. STEVE WEINSTEIN (Pacific Crest Security): You know, people, I think, just kind of tended to overshoot on the low end, and are readjusting and recalibrating.
SYDELL: Google says analysts misunderstood why there were fewer people clicking on their ads this quarter. Improvements in the company's ad formula meant that those who did click were more likely to actually buy something. Their carefully targeted ads give them an edge in a slow economy, says Allen Weiner, an analyst at Gartner.
Mr. ALLEN WEINER (Analyst, Gartner): And in an uncertain climate, people who are looking for efficiency in their online dollars are probably turning to online advertising, because they get the best bang for their buck.
SYDELL: Weiner says Google also got a boost from its growing overseas operations. He says that's likely to make rivals Yahoo and Microsoft a little worried, because it might cut into an overseas market where both have done better than in the U.S. against the fast-growing Silicon Valley behemoth.

NSW: Man forced wife to work as a prostitute: police say
SYDNEY, April 16 AAP - A man who forced his wife to work as a prostitute in Sydney
has been charged with sex slavery offences.
The 37-year-old man went to Egypt in early 2000 for an arranged marriage with a 25-year-old
Egyptian woman, police said in a statement.
When the couple arrived back in Australia months later the man allegedly told his wife
she would have to work to pay for her Australian visa.
He then took her to a brothel at Banksia in Sydney's south, where she was forced to
work for two-and-a-half years, police alleged.
Police said the man took her earnings and used them to purchase a unit and fund his
family in Lebanon.
The pair returned to Egypt in 2002, where they divorced and both subsequently came
back to Australia.
Police yesterday arrested the man, who now lives at Wiley Park, in Sydney's south-west
and charged him with procuring a person for prostitution and sex slavery offences.
During a hearing today at Parramatta the man was granted conditional bail and ordered
to appear at Kogarah Local Court on May 9.

E-trade is now available for all; Professor Tony Davies of Cardiff University's eCommerce Innovation Centre argues that the use of sophisticated eCommerce techniques to boost efficiency and improve sales isn't just for big companies.(Business)
Byline: Tony Davies
HELPING small businesses get clued up on eCommerce is what the eCommerce Innovation Centre and Opportunity Wales are all about.
Using this technology companies across Wales are already utilising tools like email, the internet and simple websites to improve efficiency, reduce costs, become more responsive and find new markets.
But this is just the beginning. The targeted use of more advanced eCommerce in the business-to-business market could include joining an eMarketplace, or in the business-to-consumer market offering personalised products and services to customers. Driven by the need to innovate, firms are increasingly using such tools to deliver business benefits. These include: # Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) In use for more than 15 years, traditional EDI has been conducted over dedicated ``value-added'' networks linking small companies with their larger trading partners, and is now evolving to exploit the internet, which will make it much easier and cheaper for smaller businesses to use. CellPoint Subsidiary Unwire Signs $2.8 Million Contract.
Business/Technology Editors
STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 2000
Mobile phone users in Ireland will soon be able to buy from vending machines using their mobile phones, thanks to a $2.8 million technology deal between CellPoint (Nasdaq:CLPT) subsidiary Unwire and integrated mobile technologies specialist ItsMobile.com.
Under the two-year contract, Unwire will provide 8,500 telematics servers to ItsMobile.com for use in GSM-based machine-to-machine solutions for vending machines and parking services. ItsMobile.com can also utilize CellPoint's GSM positioning services for its vehicle fleet dispatch. Unwire's wireless telematics terminals and applications provide remote management and control of machines and equipment through GSM networks.
ItsMobile develops mobile commerce applications and telemetry solutions for cellular operators and mobile ISPs across Europe. Commented CEO Donal McGuinness: "Thanks to Unwire's GSM-servers, we don't have to develop our own platforms, so we can focus on what we do best - the applications. We intend to use the Unwire product suite to roll out our telemetry and positioning applications and see Unwire as a critical element for our SMS and telemetry based services."
The Unwire telematics terminals will be programmed as SMS (Short Messaging Service) servers and function as a combined computer and GSM phone. They are small enough to be integrated into almost any vending machine or mechanical device. When fully functional, the user can have any purchases billed automatically to his or her mobile phone account.
Said David Ericksson, President of Unwire, "This is one of many new contracts to come for Unwire and is another breakthrough for the telematics industry. Machine-to-Machine, or M2M is a market that will explode in the near future and we intend to be one of the leading companies."
Unwire AB (www.unwire.com) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of CellPoint Inc. Unwire develops and manufactures wireless telematics terminals, designs wireless applications and is considered to be a leading company in the world for innovative wireless telematics services. Unwire has four universal GSM Server terminal products, the UP 100, UP 200, GT-1 and GT-3. Each can be used for measuring, control, communication and positioning. Unique software is written for each new application, and Unwire has a growing software library of commercially deployable applications.
